Chuck Performs “Down the Road a Piece” at the studios of classic rock station Q104.3. “Down the Road a Piece” was written by Don Raye in 1940. This song has been covered by a myriad of musicians and bands; Chuck Berry, Manfred Mann, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Rolling Stones, Foghat and Bruce Springsteen to name a few. The original lyrics of the song refer to musicians from the Will Bradley trio. In the subsequent cover versions, musicians’ names were usually changed to refer to members of the cover bands. In Chuck’s version he uses the lyrics from one of his life long idols, Jerry Lee Lewis. In the rock and roll history books, Chuck will be credited for being the artist who brought piano improvisation to rock and roll. In this live recording, Chuck throws us a curve ball by improvising …

"The Brothers" tribute concert to honor 50 years of Allman Brothers music was a true homage to the band's history. For those of us who had the pleasure of joining the band members before the show, the most asked question was "who are going to be the special guests". There were no special guests. And none were needed. With guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks out in front; Allman Brothers original member Jaimoe on drums along with Marc Quinones of Widespread Panic and Duane Trucks; Oteil Burbridge on bass; and with pre-Allman band member Reese Wynans on organ and Chuck Leavell on keys, the only person who could have added any more talent to the lineup would have been Dickey Betts. Given the unease and fear of the corona virus, the "The Brothers" played to a sold-out Madison …

Reprint from "Business Jet Traveler" August 2019 Chuck Leavell, the Rolling Stones’ de facto musical director, has played keyboards for the group on record and on tour since 1982. Earlier, he was a member of the Allman Brothers Band (it’s his piano solo you hear on their classic “Jessica”) and a cofounder of the jazz-rock outfit Sea Level, which took its moniker from his first initial and surname. Leavell has also performed or recorded with many other leading musicians, including Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, George Harrison, the Black Crowes, and Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour. The latest of his six solo albums, last year’s Chuck Gets Big, finds him backed by a 17-piece brass band and performing original songs alongside classics from the Stones, the Allman Brothers, and other …

Here is the full concert of “Chuck Leavell & His Big Band” live at the Gramercy Theatre, Aug 7. This concert is a real treat. Chuck performs many of his signature songs from the Allman Brothers, The Rolling Stones, and some of his own but he goes BIG with the 16 piece “Big Apple, Big Band” which includes many of NYC’s top studio and session musicians. As a special surprise for the audience, for “Honky Tonk Women”, Chuck brought out a few of his bandmates from the Rolling Stones; Charlie Watts on drums, Daryl Jones on bass, Sasha Allen on vocals, Karl Denson on sax, and Matt Clifford on cow bells. It was obvious that Charlie had a blast, Sasha got to shine and belt out the verse, and Karl’s sax solo was electrifying. And Daryl did what Darryl does best- he held down the groove. …
